Looking Forward to the End

Written by Shaun Daniels and Edited by Sharon Wong

2012, the year of the Dragon and the year the Mayan calendar marks as the beginning of the end.  For The Fright Channel, it’s one of another year in a lifetime of years but it also means a fresh crop of movies, TV shows and comic books.  Let us look to the future in all things media and highlight what we’re looking forward to in the year 2012.

FILM

THE AVENGERS
Not fright but comic book and sci-fi-related, The Avengers is a movie we are contractually obligated to watch as it’s from Joss Whedon.  Starting with 2008’s Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, hints have been dropped at an Avengers movie.  For those people who stayed until the end and/or the end credits of Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America, they were treated to the plot thread that involves the formation of the superheroes team of Captain America, Hawkeye, The Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Black Widow.  It’s no wonder why this film is at the top of our and just about everyone’s must-see 2012 movie list.  We’re already counting down the days till its release.

THE CABIN IN THE WOODS
This on-again, off-again movie co-written by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard will finally see its day in theaters in April on the second Friday the 13th of 2012. No one is quite sure what the hell The Cabin in the Woods is about but it sure looks damn creepy.  The first set of trailers will have you perversely interested in the relatively short lives of a group of friends who go to a ‘cabin in the woods’ for a vacation.  The friends get more than they bargained for when they become trapped in this weird pseudo-prison/hunting ground for a very twisted group of people who may or may not be seeking revenge.  In true Whedonesque fashion, the film stars Whedon project alums, the lovable Amy Acker (Angel, Dollhouse), Fran Kranz (Dollhouse), Tom Lenk (Buffy, Angel) and now, Chris Hemsworth (The Avengers).

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES
Again not fright but comic book-related, The Dark Knight Rises is another one of the most anticipated films of the year.  With all of the speculation and anticipation of Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) and Bane (Tom Hardy) appearing in the film, this sequel is at the top, top of the list.  The big question is if it can live up to the mega-successful, critically and financially, predecessor The Dark Knight.  Even with the multiple award-winning Inception under his belt, can Christopher Nolan truly finish out his franchise on a high note?  We’ll find out this summer if the curtain call on Batman will be a success or an unmitigated hype failure.

PROMETHEUS
This sci-fi thriller has set the rumor mill ablaze with whether or not it is a prequel to Ridley Scott’s Alien film franchise.  Scott has downplayed the connection to the franchise, claiming fans will see slight connections to the world of Alien.  Prometheus is set 80 years before the events of the first film, and explores the concept of human evaluation and if humans received help from ancient alien astronauts.

TV

ALCATRAZ
This Lostesque show has peaked our interest enough to have us setting our DVRs on record.  Alcatraz has Lost alum Jorge Garcia and is produced by J.J. Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot (Fringe, Super 8).  The premise is a bit of a mystery but centers on the disappearance of 302 prisoners and guards from Alcatraz, only to return 50 years later to the present time.

COMICS

HELLBOY IN HELL
Mike Mignola ripped our hearts out, figuratively, and ripped Hellboy’s heart out, literally.  After twelve years of publication, Mignola killed Hellboy but fear not, Hellboy has a new life at Dark Horse Comics with the best part being Mignola doing the art.  Yes, you heard us right…Mignola will be drawing Hellboy in Hell.

THE RETURN OF VALIANT COMICS
It’s been a while since we thought of Valiant, or its last incarnation Acclaim, but that’s all going to change.  2012 marks the return of the ‘90s comic powerhouse that once rivaled DC and Marvel.  The re-launch kicks off on Free Comic Book Day in May with Valiant planning to focus on their most popular titles like X-O Manowar, Bloodshot and Harbinger.

FATALE
Constant collaborators Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips are bringing their talents over to Image Comics this year with Fatale.  Boasting one part noir and one part horror of the H. P. Lovecraft persuasion, there’s no doubt that we’re looking forward to it.  Definitely expect a few dames and calamari-faced monsters from this book.

HOAX HUNTERS
From backup to ongoing, we can’t wait to see what the creative team of Michael Moreci, Steve Seeley and Axel Medellin can do in their own book.  Hoax Hunters follows a reality TV show that investigates urban legends to debunk them and by debunking them, it means hiding sinister truths from the world.  This spring, the ongoing kicks off but if you missed Hoax Hunters on the back of Hack/Slash, all you have to do is catch up with issue #0.
