Absolutely nothing could stop Michael Bay and the Transformers as they topped the box office once again at #1. Though last week’s numbers were thought of as somewhat low due to the residual issues of the previous sequel, Revenge of the Fallen, this week’s numbers indicate that the movie is holding onto the interest of audiences. Newcomers Horrible Bosses ($28.302 million) and ZooKeeper ($20.065 million) landed in at #2 and #3 respectively while #4 Cars 2 ($15.212 million) and #5 Bad Teacher ($8.914 million) continue to move down the box office together like the best of friends but remain strong.
After a record-breaking July 4th weekend, Transformers: Dark of the Moon is currently the top-grossing movie of 2011 as it continues to conquer the box office even with a 51.9% plunge. The Autobots and Shia LeBeouf vs. Decepticons movie pulled in $47.103 million over the average three-day summer weekend and has managed to cover and top the estimated production budget of $195 million in just 12 days domestically with $261.078 million. It is fairing slightly better in the foreign markets at $384 million. The sequel will likely top the original Transformers ($709.709 million) but may fall short of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen ($836.297 million) as its worldwide box office has already reached $645.078 million.
Super 8 fell two spots to #7 but is staying strong in its fifth weekend at the box office as more recent releases like Monte Carlo, Mr. Popper’s Penguins and Green Lantern are trailing the J.J. Abrams movie. The sci-fi homage to Steven Spielberg, the movie’s producer, grossed $4.8.38 million over the weekend and is now at $169.069 million.
DC Comics superhero Green Lantern is holding on for dear life at #10 but is unlikely to return to the top ten next week due to the most anticipated premiere of the year (see below). The movie dropped from #7 with a gross of $3.147 million and is still in the red; it must gross an additional $56.968 million to break even.
