6.26.2011: What To Watch – "It's Going To Be A Wiccan Good Season" TV Edition

It’s been over 9 months since the season finale of True Blood‘s third season and we’re thirstier than Russell in his cement grave.  Bring us the blood or at least a pack of Tru Blood!

True Blood (premieres Sunday, June 26th at 9 on HBO)  Starring Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Sam Trammell, Ryan Kwanten, Rutina Wesley, Nelsan Ellis, Alexander Skarsgård and Joe Manganiello.  Created and Produced by Alan Ball.

The third season of True Blood ended on highs and lows with deception (the meeting between Sookie and Bill began with an order from the queen), discovery (Sookie’s powers are attributed to her being a fairy; fairy Claudine whisked Sookie to fairyland), escape (Tara left Bon Temps after reuniting with Sam), love (Hoyt defied his mother and ex-girlfriend by telling Jessica he wants to marry her) and revenge (Eric avenged the death of his human family by burying King Russell Edgington in cement to “live” but suffer then Bill attempted to bury Eric in cement too, but Eric returned to reveal Bill’s true reason as to why Bill and Sookie met – talk about a triangle of revenge).  With an average 5 million viewers per first-run episode last season, True Blood clearly is leaving audiences hot and bothered just like Sookie is over Bill, Eric and Alcide, the three men/vampire/werewolf that provide her with yearning, longing, lust and protection.  Sex is not the only thing on her mind as Sookie must contend with fairies, (new) werewolves and wiccans in the fourth season.  The introduction to the wiccans begins with Jesus, who has admitted to being a witch, bringing Lafayette to meet the coven, specifically Marnie, played by Fiona Shaw (Aunt Petunia in the Harry Potter series).  Things go awry from here like Eric’s memory loss after a spell cast by the witch.  Unlike Alan Ball’s other provocative hit HBO show, Six Feet Under, he has not “hit the wall yet” even after several seasons.  What helps is the supernatural element of the show that allows Ball to keep the characters evolving “as long as they make sense organically.”

Episode Synopsis (“She’s Not There“):  Life goes on in Bon Temps – with and without a “traveling” Sookie (Paquin) – as Eric (Skarsgård) and Bill (Moyer) take different public-relations routes to win over humans and Sam (Trammell) bonds with kindred spirits.  Meanwhile, Hoyt (Jim Parrack) and Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) can’t agree on dinner, Jesus (Kevin Alejandro) introduces Lafayette (Ellis) to a local coven, and Tara (Wesley) finds a release for her anger.  courtesy of TV Guide
