5.13-5.15.2011: Weekend Box Office – The $

It was a wedding of a weekend for #2 Bridesmaids but less than thunderous for #1 Thor and #4 Priest at the box office.  Produced by Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Pineapple Express) and starring Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live, Whip It) with an amazing female cast and Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm, the comedy for both sexes alike brought in $26.247 million in it first weekend.  It tossed a $10 million less weekend gross expectation like a bride’s bouquet and covered at least three-fourths of its $32.5 million budget.  Let’s just say it was a perfect opening for the wedding season.

Although Thor and his hammer sat once again at the #1 spot in its second weekend, the almighty was less than mighty with $34.703 million, almost half of last week’s premiere gross.  International sales were at $27.5 million.  A drop to #2 or #3 will surely be in its future (meaning next week).

Priest, landed in at a dissapointing #4 behind Fast Five with $14.953 million.  Director Scott Stewart and star Paul Bettany’s first collaboration, Legion, did one better opening at $17.501 million in January 2010.  Based on Min-Woo Hyung’s Korean graphic novel, Priest banked on vampires and the sexy Maggie Q of Nikita (hopefully to be renewed) but wasn’t able to reign in the male audience that was still watching Thor and Fast Five.

Check out ‘What To Watch – Theater Edition’ on Friday for this week’s new movie releases…it’s full of booty.
