Pirates of the Caribbean: 5?

With less than two weeks (May 20th 2011) from the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth installment but the first in 3D in the series, Disney is readying itself for the fifth as the studio received a yet-to-be-titled Pirates 5 script from screenwriter Terry Rossio (Aladdin, The Mask of Zorro, Shrek) last weekend.  Rossio penned the script without Ted Elliott, his collaborator on the first four films, but Disney isn’t afraid of this writing change.  Disney “sources” have hinted to Rob Marshall (Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha, Nine), the director of the fourth film (Gore Verbinski directed the first three films), to helm the next.  As for the series’s star, Johnny Depp, it remains to be seen if he will become the Keith Richards-inspired Jack Sparrow again.  Depp is not opposed to wearing the puffy shirt again but would like a bit of distance between the movies.  “It’s not something where I would say, ‘Let’s shoot it next month to get it out by Christmas 2012.’ We should hold off for a bit. They should be special, just like they are special to me. Depp says.”  This bit of sequel news is no surprise since Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006) and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007) have grossed $3 billion worldwide with …On Stranger Tides projected to be a blockbuster as well. I guess we’ll have to see if we’re ‘aarghh!’ over the new Pirates
