It’s the first Saturday of May and that means only one thing, it’s Free Comic Book Day ! Now, hold on before you go rushing down to a comic book shop looking for Giant-Size X-Men #1 as not all comics are free, just a limited number of titles from select comics. If you are unfamiliar with Free Comic Book Day, it is a program designed by comic publishers, independent comic book shops, and Diamond Comic Distributers in an effort to attract new readers and expose current readers to new comics. Even without hard numbers, it is safe to say most local comic book shops participate in this promotional program but not all do due to cost as these shops have to purchase these freebies (between 12-50 cents per copy). But before embarking on a quest for free comics, check with stores to see if they are celebrating Free Comic Book Day. Oh, what’s that? You don’t know where there is a comic shop near you? Well, here’s the answer for you…Comic Shop Locator. It’s a great Website and App that will help you with your outing. Just enter your zip code in the search bar at either the Comic Book Shop Locator or App and you’ll soon be heading down to a participating shop near you. This event is not limited to just the brick and mortar but also at online downloadable stores who are getting in on the program too. The other best parts of Free Comic Book Day besides the free comic books are that many stores open early and stay open late, host comic creators at their respective stores for meet and greets for get autographs, and even more freebies. The Website Graphic.ly is a mobile, computer comic book downloading service that will have giveaways and free comics as well so sign up for an account and free comics. If you have a son, daughter, niece, nephew or a friend who you want to introduce to the world of comics, bring them along on your Free Comic Book Day adventure at your local comic book shop. Jason is the writer of one of the actual Free Comic Book Day comics,
the Kung Fu Panda/Richie Rich Flip book. He wrote both 2
of the 3 stories in the book!
Jason has written and created: A Dummy’s Guide to Danger, Curse of the Were-Woman, and The Expendable One, which is being developed into a major motion picture by Intrepid Pictures as well as written Shrek, Megamind, Jericho, Pocket God, Kung Fu Panda, Richie Rich, Fraggle Rock, and Child’s Play comics.
