6.7.2011: What To Watch – DVD/Blu-ray Releases

It’s Superhero Tuesday!  With the Ryan Reynolds’ as Green Lantern movie just around the corner (June 17), Green Lantern: Emerald Knights is one of this week’s releases and is getting fans psyched about the summer blockbuster.  The other superhero release of the week doesn’t coincide with a new movie release, though Man of Steel is in the works for 2012, but is to satisfy longtime fans of Clark Kent’s alter ego.

Exorcismus (2010) on DVD.  Starring Doug Bradley, Sophie Vavasseur, Richard Felix and Stephen Billington.  Directed by Manuel Carballo.

A Spanish-produced film, the film known as La Posesión de Emma Evans (The Possession of Emma Evans), is in English and was released on demand via IFC Midnight in January 2011.

Synopsis:  Fifteen-year-old Emma Hawkins is like any other teenage girl; she thinks that her parents don’t understand her.  She longs for independence and a life free of family ties and responsibilities and she is prepared to do anything to achieve it.  But one day she will be forced to face up to the consequences of her actions.  Life seems to be carrying on as normal, until one day Emma starts experiencing frightening fits.  Her parents are convinced that her problems are either medical or psychological, but when doctors´ tests are unable to draw any conclusions, the family is forced to look elsewhere for answers.  It all started off as a bit of fun, Emma never really believed it, but the truth is there is something dark and sinister within her, and it won’t take long to surface.

Green Lantern: Emerald Knights (2011) on DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy.  Starring (via voice) Nathan Fillion (TV’s Castle and Firefly, Slither), Jason Isaacs (Grindhouse, Harry Potter series), Elisabeth Moss (TV’s Mad Men), Kelly Hu (TV’s The Vampire Diaries, X2) and Arnold Vosloo (G.I.Joe: The Rise of Cobra, The Mummy).  Produced by Bruce Timm and others including Greg Berlanti and Sam Register.  Directed by Christopher Berkeley, Lauren Montgomery and Jay Oliva.

From DC Universe, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights is a direct-to-video/on demand original movie featuring six intertwined chapters about the Green Lantern universe.  The stories are written by animation/comic industry notables like Alan Burnett (TV’s Batman and Smurfs), Dave Gibbons (Watchmen graphic novel) and Geoff Johns (Green Lantern and Justice Society of America comics).

Synopsis:  While awaiting a battle with Krona, an ancient enemy of the Guardians of the Universe, Earth’s Green Lantern Hal Jordan, Kilowog, Sinestro and other members of the Green Lantern Corps recount their greatest adventures to new recruit Arisia – everything from tales of the first Lantern to the ominous events that led to the Corps’ Blackest Night!  courtesy of DC Universe/Warner Bros. Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology (1978-2006) on Two-Disc Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray Combo + Digital Copy.  Starring Christopher Reeve (TV’s Smallville) and Brandon Routh (Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World).

The eight-disc set includes all five Superman movies including two other editions (Christopher Reeve: Superman The Movie, Superman II, Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace / Brandon Routh: Superman Returns).  Featured on seven of the eight discs is one movie plus the usual bonus features of commentaries, deleted scenes, screen tests, ‘the making of…’ and trailers.  The additional bonus material on disc eight explores the story of Superman and a tribute to Christopher Reeve.  This anthology is a must-have for all Superman fans.
