4.29-5.1.2011: Weekend Box Office – The $

It was a blockbuster weekend but not for us horror fans (with one surprise exception). Fast Five sped into the #1 spot with $86.198 million; that’s more than half of its budget! Staying strong but at a distance in the #2 and #3 spots are Rio and Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family.

Although rated PG-13, low-budget surprise, Insidious, is delighting audiences with its old-school horror as it jumps back up one spot to #8. The film raked in $2.689 million bringing the total gross to $48.309 million. Director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell (partners behind the original Saw), and Bob Berney, president of theatrical distribution for FilmDistrict (Insidious is the company’s first distributed movie), must be laughing at supposed blockbuster hits like…

Scream 4 which has been kicked to the curb by moviegoers. The film fell to #13 from #5 in only three weeks. It looks to be the end for this once successful series and for Kevin Williamson’s dreams of a Scream 5 and 6.

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night opened at 875 screens with a weekend gross of $754,779. Not good but hardly unexpected for a horror-comedy.

Check out ‘What To Watch – Theater Edition’ on Friday for this week’s new movie releases…something about a guy and a hammer.
